Canada has a long-standing writing tradition, with its literature and creative writing styles shaped by multiculturalism, social changes, and international influences, forming a unique developmental context. Are you interested in writing or literary work?

If you wish to expand your writing potential, The University of British Columbia (UBC) offers an unparalleled rich learning experience through its Creative Writing undergraduate program. With a comprehensive curriculum, students gain exposure to diverse writing training, which not only sparks creativity but also lays a solid foundation in professional writing skills. As one of the oldest and most prestigious creative writing programs in the world, UBC offers a wide range of writing categories, guided by working, published, and award-winning authors, helping you enhance your writing techniques and expression.

Students can choose different learning paths based on their needs:

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Creative Writing – Earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
  • Minor in Creative Writing – Add a creative writing specialization to your undergraduate degree.
  • Individual courses – Support academic development, career needs, or personal growth.

Today, we focus on UBC’s Creative Writing Major and explore the opportunities it offers for your future!

UBC’s Creative Writing Major is a unique undergraduate program that adopts an advanced, independent "studio" teaching model, focusing on developing professionally skilled writers. The program admits a limited number of students each year, and admission is based primarily on an evaluation of the applicant’s original writing portfolio. Once accepted, students will immerse themselves in multiple writing genres, participating in small, professionally-oriented writing workshops for creation and discussion. Courses are guided by published authors and active writers, with peer learning from fellow writing enthusiasts. This highly interactive and collaborative learning environment helps you improve writing techniques, build confidence, and lay a strong foundation for your future writing career and beyond.

In addition to developing your personal writing style and expanding your portfolio, you will cultivate key workplace skills, such as:

  • Team collaboration – Engage with peers in writing workshops and provide feedback.
  • Communication and creative problem-solving – Improve written expression and narrative techniques.
  • Professional domain knowledge – Familiarize yourself with industry standards, preparing for writing in film scripts, stage plays, novels, comics, and more.

The program is rigorous, requiring students to complete 36 credits of 400-level CRWR creative writing workshop courses across at least four different writing genres. Additionally, students must complete other elective courses to meet the overall requirements for a UBC undergraduate degree.

If you are passionate about writing and wish to hone your skills in a professional setting, UBC’s Creative Writing Major can help you embark on a new chapter in your creative career.
